Stair Stepper

Stair StepperA Stair Stepper is kind of a funny machine. It mimics the movement of climbing stairs with just two steps. You can climb up a skyscraper and still be in the same spot. So why should you consider a Stair Stepper when planning your personal fitness routine?

Stair Stepper Benefits

Here are a few reasons why a Stair Stepper offers you a great workout and why you should use the one in your gym or get one at home:

Cardiovascular Fitness

You know that you are fit when you can run up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing (remember the movie “Rocky”?). The Stair Stepper gives you exactly that exercise but inside and if you like while watching your favourite TV show.

In addition to burning calories and helping keep your weight down, cardio workouts can help relieve stress, enhance your mood, release endorphins, improve your quality of sleep and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes. Not bad, right?

Burning Calories

With intense cardio comes intense calorie burn and if you are trying to lose weight that can be very useful. Studies at the Harvard University report that a person weighing 125 lbs. can burn 350 calories during a 30 minutes Stair Stepper workout. A person weighing more – about 185 lbs. – can burn 500 calories in the same amount of time. That is easily comparable to the calories burned on the treadmill.

Strong Legs

Stair Stepper training provides your legs with a strength-training workout. The stair stepper will work calves, thighs, hips and gluts. So if you want good looking legs the stair stepper is the ideal workout machine for you.

Depending on what other sports you do increasing the endurance of your lower legs can be very important. For example activities including mountain hiking, bicycling, skiing and rowing do benefit from a regular workout on the Stair Stepper.

No Impact

Different to a treadmill the stair stepper is a nonimpact form of exercise. That means you put less stress on your joints, tendons and ligaments like for example when you are running or playing tennis. A workout on the Stair Stepper comes without this extra pressure that can possibly cause problems like shin splints and stress fractures.

Low Stress On The Lower Body

While going up those stairs you work out the major muscles of the lower legs. That does help to strengthen, build and protect the joints and ligaments. This makes it ideal if you have a history of lower back, hip or knee problems.

Great Overall Fitness

As the Stair Stepper gives you a good cardiovascular workout it helps with your overall fitness level. It strengthens and improves the health of your lungs, heart and blood vessels. This way it can also help to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease or heart attacks.

So if you haven’t tried a Stair Stepper yet, give it a go. You will find one in most gyms and there are also mini steppers that you can use at home.

Have you been on a Stair Stepper? What is your experience with it?

I love using stairs for a workout because you get fantastic legs. I’ve never tried a stair stepper but if it gives me the same results; I’d love one.

Stairs as a workout is a simple but yet effective way to build strong legs and increase your heart beat or just to sweat a little. A great way if you prefer to stay indoors than hitting the gym!

    Kind regards

  4. I like the fact that the stair stepper puts less stress on joints, tendons and ligaments.
Years ago, when I worked in London, I decided to take the stairs every day, rather than the lift to my 7th floor office. I was back and forwards to my office several times a day, and this one exercise kept me pretty fit.
Even today, I’ll always take the stairs rather than an escalator if the option’s there.

Great points! I love using stair steppers since it won’t hamper me from doing other things like watching TV. For someone with a busy schedule like mine, stair steppers are life-savers.
